First Apartment Essentials What You need

Look, I’m not going to sugarcoat this – your first apartment is going to be equal parts amazing and absolutely terrifying. I remember my first place like it was yesterday (even though it was 15 years ago). I showed up with a futon, a TV, and exactly one spoon. For three days, I ate cereal with that single spoon and washed it obsessively between meals like some kind of deranged survivalist.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

The Bare Minimum You Need to Survive Week One

1. Something to Sleep On

  • Air mattress at minimum (but splurge on a real mattress if you can).
  • Sheets that actually fit whatever you’re sleeping on.
  • Blanket (yes, even in summer – buildings get weirdly cold).

2. Basic Hygiene Setup

  • Towel (just one is fine at first).
  • Shower curtain (unless you enjoy water all over the floor).
  • Toilet paper (don’t be that person making an emergency gas station run).

3. Food Situation

  • One pot and one pan.
  • Spatula (plastic melts, learn from my mistakes).
  • At least two of each: plates, bowls, cups, forks, knives, spoons.

What Nobody Warns You About?

Lighting will suck – overhead lights are depressing as hell. Get at least one floor lamp.

Your walls will be bare – command strips are your friend until you figure out your style

You will accumulate junk – it’s inevitable. When it happens, consider a small storage unit before your place turns into an episode of Hoarders.

The “Oh Shit” Kit You’ll Need at 2 AM

Keep these in a box labeled “OPEN FIRST”:

  • Scissors (for all that damn packaging).
  • Extension cords (outlets are never where you need them).
  • Basic tools (screwdriver, hammer, duct tape).
  • Batteries.
  • Light bulbs.
  • Plunger (seriously, don’t wait).

What You Can Absolutely Skip? (For Now)

That Pinterest-perfect apartment isn’t happening immediately. Hold off on:

  • Matching furniture sets.
  • Fancy kitchen gadgets.
  • Decor you’re not sure about.
  • Anything “just in case”.

Final Thoughts

Live in the space for a month before buying anything big. You’ll quickly learn what you actually need versus what you thought you needed. And when you do accumulate more than fits? That’s what storage units are for – way better than trying to cram everything into a tiny closet.

Remember: Your first apartment isn’t supposed to be perfect. It’s supposed to be yours. Even if that means eating takeout on the floor while you save up for a real table. We’ve all been there.
